Heart, Mind & Conscience

I've just picked up my bible, and flicked to Titus.

It's only 3 chapters long, but it's filled to the brim with interesting and challenging statements. I picked up on these verses, right at the end of chapter 1:

Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure. But nothing is pure to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, because their minds and consciences are corrupted. Such people claim they know God, but they deny Him by the way they live. They are detestable and disobedient, worthless for doing anything good.

Titus Chapter 1, Verses 15 - 16 (New Living Translation)

Harsh words you may say, but I think, when I read them, my initial thoughts turn to people who are not believers as the people Paul is describing here. However, I think this description could quite easily be applied to a believer also.

What I get from this passage is to not become too safe, or too comfortable until eventually hearts and minds become corrupted, and worthless for doing anything. Being safe and comfortable, contains the danger of becoming stagnant in faith, which ultimately could lead to corruption and unbelief.

I think that all of us, at some time are other have been guilty of claiming to 'know God' but not to live in such a way that displays that relationship. I know I have, and at times I still do. This passage serves as a warning and a reminder to remember who we really are, what has been done for us by God, and how to respect that knowledge in our daily lives, and in the choices we make.

Dear Lord,

We know that You make all things new, and that You make all things pure. Yet through our lack of faith, we can become too comfortable in our hearts and minds, which sometimes leads to corruption and disillusion.

May we never lose the knowledge of what You accomplished for us on the cross, and may we always stand up for what we believe in when called to do so, and also live in a way that is pleasing in Your sight.

In Jesus' name we pray,

Amen.
