The Spirit Moves
As I was eating breakfast this morning, I began to read the very first words that occur in the entire bible, in Genesis.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
Genesis Chapter 1, Verse 1 - 2 (New Living Translation)
As I'm in a place right now which is excited to see a change in the atmosphere, to see the Holy Spirit move amongst my local church, the community, and the nation, this passage is an important encouragement.
Taking that image of the earth being formless and empty, I long to see the Holy Spirit hover over lives that appear to be formless and empty, and devoid of life, and that includes my own.
I love the fact that even when circumstances, spaces, places, hearts and minds seem to be lacking in life, and covered in darkness, the Spirit of God can still work amongst it all, and through it all, and even more than that, bring life to a situation.
I am also amazed by the fact that the same Spirit, the Holy Spirit of God, that was hovering over the deep waters when God created the earth, is still moving today, and is alive in all of us. As Paul describes to us in 1 Corinthians:
Don't you realise that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?
1 Corinthians Chapter 3, Verse 16 (NLT)
We just need to welcome Him, and accept Him, and I pray that we will start to move with Him.
Dear Lord,
Thank You so much for creating the Heavens and the Earth. I pray that Your Holy Spirit, that hovered over the dark, deep waters of the new Earth, will move amongst us, and change us and inspire us to follow You in new and creative ways, and lead us to uphold and glorify the name of Jesus Christ, who was and is, and is to come.
We welcome You Holy Spirit, and praise You for Your goodness and grace.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
